Kale (闇魔将・悪奴弥守, Darkness Demon General Anubis) is one of the four Dark Warlords. Known as the Dark Warlord of Corruption, as well as the Warlord of Darkness, he served Emperor Talpa and was an enemy of the Ronin Warriors.

Kale is voiced by Richard Newman, Peter Wilds (Episode 2 only) and Scott McNeil (uncredited; Episodes 31, 32, and 35) and Yasunori Matsumoto in the original Japanese version.

Appearance[]

Cale

Kale has short blue hair and blue eyes. He has a cross shaped scar on the left side of his face over his eye. For the duration of the series, he his solely seen in his armor and undergear. Kale's armor is brown, black, and red with a red cape and a hook on the back for his sword. His undergear is entirely red in color.

Personality[]

Kale is always quick to mock Anubis' failures, even though the younger man is his leader. He gains the title of leader of the Dark Warlords himself after Anubis' deflection from the Dynasty. It is short lived, however, as his position is usurped by Lady Kayura; something that Kale doesn't take well. He has the hardest time of the Warlords accepting that Talpa has just been using them for the power of their armors, probably because of his virtue of Obedience.

The War with Talpa[]

Kale first appears when the Ronin Warriors first unite. Although he appeared on and off a few times during the first few fights, he does not get his first solo appearance until Sage and Mia went to the Throne of the Gods to find Kento. When there, he plunged his sword into the rock in order to pierce Kento's heart. He was able to drive Sage and Mia away for a while but was shocked when the Halo warrior returned and was able to free Kento while defeating Kale in the process.

He would face Sage again when the Ronin's had been separated in the city and nearly succeeded in overwhelming Sage with his powers of Darkness until Yuli used The Ancient's Staff to turn things around. When the Ronin's invaded the Netherworld for the first time, Kale participated in the fight until Talpa called for the Warlords to give him their armors and powers to begin regaining his physical body.

Kale next appeared when Talpa sent him to try to capture Sage when the teen was searching for the spirit of his armor. Although Sage was able to beat him, Kale did succeed in capturing the Halo warrior. Not long after, Kale became angered when Talpa began showing favoritism toward Lady Kayura and didn't rely on the Warlord's as much.

After the Ronin's reunited and began the final attack, Kale and the other Warlord's were captured and they finally accepted that Talpa was using them for his own purpose. After they were freed, Kale joined the Ronin's in trying to stop the dark emperor. When Talpa was beaten for good, Kale joined Kayura and the others and presumably left the mortal world.

Armor and Powers[]

Kale08

The Armor of Darkness and Corruption, or the Armor of the Jackal, is a representation of the Winter season, which Kale uses to his advantage. He even has the ability to see through the deepest darkness. The armor is modeled after the Egyptian god Anubis. The weapon of the Jackal armor is a nodachi (similar to the one Sage carries, but without the shurikan), which is able to absorb the light in order to increase darkness. His special attack is "Koku Rou Ken Ankoku Cho Uhigiri" (which translates as "Black Wolf Sword Leaping Darkness," but was changed to "Black Lightning Slash" in the dub).

Relationships[]

  • Sage of the Halo: Due to how often they fought one another and that their elements/powers are opposite of each other, Kale and Sage are viewed as the other's main rival.
  • Talpa: Kale was possibly the most loyal Warlord to Talpa, possibly due to his virtue of Obedience. He would often volunteer his services to the Dynasty emperor and was the most difficult to believe that Talpa was more concerned about his armor and powers instead of him. However, once the truth was revealed, Kale devoted himself to stopping Talpa.

Trivia[]

  • For the English dub, Anubis' Japanese name is given to Shuten.
  • Due to the number of times they have faced off in the series, as well as the fact that they have opposite elements, fans claim that Kale is Sage's main adversary.
  • Fans have been known to spell his English dub name as "Kale" or "Cale." It is unknown which one is considered correct (though the official Playmates figure spells his name as "Cale").
  • Kale's kanji in episodes 19 and 32 are shown to be different kanji.
